What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy, is a healthcare profession that involves the treatment of physical impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities caused by injuries or diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. This includes muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves. Physical therapists, also known as PTs, are healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating these physical problems through various techniques and methods.

Intake methodology.

At your first appointment, a physical therapist will take a detailed history of your complaints and perform a comprehensive physical examination to determine the root cause of your problem. This helps the physical therapist develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and goals. Treatment plans may include a combination of exercises, manual therapy, education, and modalities such as heat or ice.

Personalized treatment plans.

Physical therapy treatment plans are tailored to each individual based on their unique circumstances, as each person’s body reacts differently. The number of treatments required depends on the severity and complexity of the problem, as well as the patient’s response to treatment. Physical therapists also place a great deal of emphasis on preventing the recurrence of the problem, so patients are often given exercises and instructions to perform at home to maintain their progress.

What to expect at a physical therapy appointment.

Physical therapy sessions typically last around 30 minutes and can take place in a private consulting room or in the gym. The sessions can include various forms of therapy, such as hands-on manual therapy, exercises, and modalities such as heat, ice, or electrical stimulation. Physical therapists also provide advice and education to their patients about lifestyle changes that can promote healing and prevent future injuries.

Physical Therapy sessions can be done in a private room.

Promoting overall health and wellness.

In addition to providing treatment, physical therapists also play a critical role in promoting overall health and wellness. They work closely with patients to help them achieve their physical goals, whether that is returning to a specific sport or activity, or simply being able to perform daily tasks without pain or discomfort.

Physical therapy is also available on the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba as well.
